Directions:There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A,B,C and D.You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.

Passage 1

Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:

Aging is the major risk for many types of cancer, that is to say,the older you get,the more likely you are to be diagnosed(确诊).And increasingly, experts recognize that age is more than just the number of candles on a birthday cake. It's also the wear and tear on the body, caused by lifestyle, stress and biology, which is sometimes referred to as person's biological age.

(76)"We all know cancer is an aging disease. However,it is really coming to a younger population. So whether we can use the well-developed concept of biological aging and apply that to the younger generation is a really untouched area,"said Dr.Cao,an associate professor of surgery at the Washington University School of Medicine in St.Louis and senior author of the new research, which was presented Sunday at the American Association of Cancer Research's annual conference in San Diego.

Cao and her team found that people, born in 1965 or later who are around 60 now, were 17% more likely to show accelerated aging than those born from 1950 through 1954.

After adjusting the data, the researchers found that accelerated aging was linked with increased risk for cancer.(77)But she also admits that the study has limitations. For example, people in the study were not followed over time. The blood test results were from a single test,so they gave only a limited signal of risk, which may change.Ideally, she said, researchers would be able to follow the same group for years, taking blood samples along the way to get a more accurate trajectory(轨迹)of their risk.

Blaes, one of the team members, said that if you can find people who are at higher risk because their cells are aging faster, you can target lifestyle interventions(干预):things like healthy food, exercise and sleep and so on.

1.According to Parahraph 1,biological age is _____.

A.the number of years of physical wear and tear

B.the number of years when you are diagnosed with cancer

C.the number of candles on a birthday cake

D.a major risk for many types of cancers

2.According to Dr.Cao_____.

A.the blood test results were not accepted

B.the concept of biological aging is not applicable to the young

C.the aging process cannot be intervened

D.the accelerated aging indicates higher risk for cancer

3.The word that in Paragraph 2 refers to_____.

 A.the concept of biological aging

 B.the number of birthday cakes

 C.the younger generation

 D.the risk of cancer

4.The limitation of Cao's research is that_____.

A.the researchers just relied on one blood type for test results

B.the researchers did not follow the sample group over years

C.the researchers only followed the sample population born in 1950

D.the researchers are not from the same univerity

5.Blaes believed that lifestyle intervention_____.

A.ought not to include blood tests

 B.could work against bilolgical aging

C.would fail if people were at higher risk of cancer

D.should not be used if accelerated aging occurred

Passage 2

Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:

Antarctic(南极洲)is the 5th largest continent(大陆). It covers approximately 5.5 million square miles;however, the actual size of the continent varies from month to month. It varies because the ice edge of the continent is always changing. The land itself is 98% covered by the Antarctic Ice Sheet, which is an average of 1.6 miles thick and holds about 90% of the fresh water on Earth.

Antarctica is divided into two parts by the mountains. These mountains run between the Ross Sea and the Weddell Sea and separate east from west.East Antarctica is higher in elevation(高度).Here the ice and snow rises over 14,000 feet.

Antarctica has an average elevation of about 7,500 feet. The highest point, standing at 16,050 feet,is the peak of Vinson Massif in the Ellsworth Mountain range. In contrast, the lowest point currently known is the Bentley Subglacial Trench(海沟).It is 8,200 feet below sea level.(78)However,the trench is covered by more than 9840 feet of ice and snow.

While it may seem like there would be no bodies of water in Antarctica,it is actually home to more than 70 lakes. All of these lakes are covered by thousands of feet of ice.Lake Vostok is the largest of the lakes. It was discovered in 1996,beneath Russia's Vostok Station.

Antarctca currently receives groups of scientists who study the special environment there. The only other people who visit Antarctica arrive on some special ships.Since the 1960s,an ever increasing number of people have decided that the ideal vacation includes a tour of the Southern Ocean, with landings at some Antarctic islands extending from the continent.

Antarctica has no permanent residents and, unlike all other continents,it has no native population.(79)In fact,no one is known to have set eyes on Antarctica until 1820.

6.Which of the following is TRUE about Antarctica?

A.separate the eastern part from the western one

 B.have 14,000-foot-thick ice and snow
